Summary
The recently widowed Great-Aunt Tom from Australia is not a welcome visitor at Fogdens' Farm. Though wealthy she pays nothing for her keep but orders all manner of little luxuries for her enjoyment; and she has dispossessed her sister Great-Aunt Pops from her usual bedroom. Her Great-Neice Jane is engaged to be married, but the arrival of a butcher from Budleigh Salterton, boasting that he has been asked to marry Mis Fogden, so incenses her fiance that he breaks off the engagement. However it transpires that the butche's Miss Fogden is really Great-Aunt Pops, who has been put in touch with him through a matrimonial paper and who inadvertently enclosed a snapshot of Jane in her letter. When he learns that there is no bride for him at Fogden's the butcher turns nasty and refuses to go away unless he is paid twenty pounds. But nobody has twenty pounds - except Great-Aunt Tom. She offers to pay it in exchange for a family dresser that she has always coveted. The bargain is struck, but before Great-Aunt Pops's butcher can get away, Arthur, Jane's intended, retrieves the money , which is used by the Fogdens to pay for Great-Aunt Tom's extravagant board and lodgings.
