Summary
Ernest Shiner and his wife are a selfish, feckless couple who let one mean room to Aunt Flo and allow their youngest daughter to do all the housework for them. They are expecting their rich Uncle Gabriel from America and they hope to persuade him to pay off their debts and to give their elder daughter Pamela an allowance so she can marry. Pamela returns from the station with an elderly gentleman who is warmly welcomed as Uncle Gabriel by everybody. It is not until Ernest ha acted on his top tip for the stock exchange (with disasterous results) that they discover he is really Mr Nutt and has been dazed by a bump on the head as he got off the train, and that when he promised Pamela an allowance he thought he was taking an order for cheese, the comodity in which he travels. By now Ernest has lost his last remaining savings and is forced to sell the house to Aunt Flo, who announces her intention to of treating the Shiners as they have treated her.
