Summary
Mrs Rawson is very worried about Alf, her husband, on account of his association with a good-for-nothing, Jonas Binstead. Binstead calls one afternoon in an endeavour to get Alf to fork out ten shillings to put on a hundred-to-one certainty, but the latter is broke. His wife takes all his wages and allows him very little for himself. On the mantelpiece is an envelope containing two ten-shilling notes to pay a bill, and the two men are about to raid this when they are disturbed by Mrs Rawson. Binstead takes his departure. While the men's backs are turned Mrs Rawson, sensing their game, takes the notes from the envelope and replaces it. She then goes out shopping. Binstead comes back, and he and Alf get the idea of staging a burglary. Chairs are overturned and Alf is knocked "unconscious". Binstead seizes the envelope, but has not gone far down the road when he discovers that the notes are missing. The friendship of the precious pair comes to an abrupt ending.
