Summary
Captain Pengellan, returning from Egypt on leave, becomes acquainted in an unconventional way with a charming widow, Lady Armitage. She is engaged to be married to Captain Pengellan's friend, and he has the awkward task of disillusioning the widow about his brother officer. That gentleman has married the daughter of a vulgar lady of wealth, and at the end of the play Lady Armitage is brought face to face with her successul rival - a most unattractive girl at the best of times, but on board a Channel steamer even less so than usual. That the man could have preferred such a creature to her gives Lady Armitage an insight into his character hitherto denied her, and she is conscious of having successfully avoided a dreadful error.
