Cecil Macrae, a rising young doctor, has just bought a practice in Kensington where his mother and his Aunt Sophie live with him, the latter acting as his secretary. When he falls in love with Dulcie Plynter these two ladies are much perturbed because they think her not good enough for their idolized Cecil. In the second act we find Dulcie, now married to Cecil, leading a miserable existence, being denied any share in the management of house or practice by Cecil's relations. In desperation she turns to her old flame Tony Patterson for companionship, which annoys Cecil who is repeatedly reminded of it by the older women. Finally, things come to such a pass that Dulcie decides to run away with Tony, but before she takes the fatal step Fortune puts into her hands a weapon against Aunt Sophie: information that the latter had secretly married out of her class and is the mother of a grown-up son. When this son turns up at the house, Sophie, amazingly, is so glad to see him that she decides to go with him to Australia. Cecil, at last taking decisive action, refuses to let Dulcie go with Tony and rushes her off for a last holiday, but before they leave Dulcie impulsively makes friends with Sophie, and the play ends with the prospect of future happiness in store for everyone.
