A SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD. TITLE
Full-Length Play, Drama / 12w, 10m
by Howard Richardson and William Berney
Based on the haunting Scottish folk song “The Ballad of Barbara Allen,” this earthy and imaginative Broadway hit – a unique blend of Appalachian storytelling and gothic spiritualism – takes place in a Smoky Mountain community, where a strange “witch boy” falls in love with a beautiful human girl, raising anger and fear among their superstitious neighbors.
This perennial favorite, first produced on Broadway in 1945, is based on the haunting Scottish folk song “The Ballad of Barbara Allen.” Employing a large cast and imaginative settings, Dark of the Moon recounts the story of John, a strange “witch boy” who falls in love with the beautiful Barbara Allen in a small town in the Smoky Mountains. John is given human form to woo and marry Barbara – on the condition that she remain true to him for at least one year. The marriage is consummated, and Barbara gives birth to a witch child, whom the townspeople destroy in a superstitious frenzy. During a religious revival, Barbara is led to betray her husband, thus breaking their spell of love. As she dies, John returns forever to the world of the mountain witches.
The play has been highly praised for its unique blend of Appalachian storytelling, gothic spiritualism and powerful exploration of love and fate. Described as a “hicksville meets Shakespeare,” Dark of the Moon delves into the clash between religious fundamentalism and otherworldly paganism, raising compelling questions about faith, love and death.

“Haunting… thoroughly spell-binding.” – DC Theater Arts
“Gusto, vitality, humor and a natural and easygoing way of introducing folk songs that add up to an engaging evening on Broadway. There’s a swing and spirit to the best scenes that had some of the audience tapping its feet and humming.” – New York Post
“Engages the audience on a musical, mystical folk level… [The] tall tale’s resonance is inescapable: the inhumanity of humans who are not so fair and far darker than witches, the ever-present implications of witch hunts, the horrific spoils of religious fanaticism.” – The New York Times
“Haunting… retells the tragic story of love, betrayal, and death within the context of American witch-lore… thoroughly spell-binding.” – DC Theater Arts
