Stephen Smith
Stephen Smith started writing plays in 1985 and has so far had fifteen published. He either directs or appears in every play and has won numerous Best New Play Awards. His plays have been produced not only throughout the UK but in many overseas countries as well, with Parentcaft translated into Dutch and Penalty into Romanian.
The majority of his plays are one-acts, but several have been designed to be also performed together for a complete evening's entertainment. His most-performed plays have been the comedies Departure, set at Gatwick airport, Background Artist, set in an extras agency, and Parentcraft, set in a maternity hospital.
In 2011 he formed his own theatre company, Big Squirrel Productions, to perform his plays, where A Middle Aged Man's Uncertainty Theory received critical acclaim at the both the 2011 Camden Fringe and the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe. Since then, he has premiered Chrysalis and Alana in Edinburgh as well as co-writing Big Squirrel versions of Aladdin and Cinderella, also at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2016.
Stephen is a professional actor, with his recent plays published under his equity name, Stephen Scheurer-Smith. Currently he is co-writing, with his daughter Kattreya, a brand new pantomime called Superella, to be premiered in his home city of Cambridge in April 2022.
