Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka was born on July 13, 1934, in western Nigeria. He was educated at Government College and the University of Leeds. While studying in England he was a dramaturge at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Soyinka later returned to Leeds to obtain his doctorate in 1973. Much of his writing is based on the mythology of the Yoruba, a West African ethnic group. His plays include THE SWAMP DWELLERS, THE LION AND THE JEWEL, THE TRIALS OF BROTHER JERO, JERO'S METAMORPHOSIS, A DANCE OF THE FORESTS, KONGI'S HARVEST, MADMEN AND SPECIALISTS, THE STRONG BREED, THE ROAD, DEATH AND THE KING'S HORSEMAN, A PLAY OF GIANTS, and REQUIEM FOR A FUTUROLOGIST. Soyinka has also written novels such as “The Interpreters,” “Season of Anomy,” “The Man Died: Prison Notes,” and the account of his childhood, “Aké.” Today he is considered by many as Africa’s greatest playwright.
