A scene between wife and lover, interrupted by the husband, is played passionaltely in mime and afterwards with words. It proves to be merely that the lvoer smells of onions, and that the husband orders him to go and fetch some.
The soldier's girl is seeing him off with the usual trite messages. After several false starts, the train moves out, just as he discovers that he has mistaken the date and need not go back yet.
