Tim Phillips

Tim Phillips is an award-winning Canadian/British composer and lyricist. He is a graduate of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His first foray into musical theatre came after joining forces with Marc Teitler to create their concept album Burn Me Dead, based on Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. The project was variously a fringe theatre show, hybrid stand up performance, and album. Following on from The Grinning Man Tim is developing new musicals with collaborators around the world. He is also Co-Artistic Director of Filter Theatre, one of Britain’s most innovative and critically acclaimed theatre companies. Filter shows have toured extensively.

As a theatre composer his other work includes composing the music for productions such as A Doll’s House (Donmar Warehouse); Rabbit Hole (Hampstead Theatre); Silence (Filter/ RSC); Juliet And Her Romeo (Bristol Old Vic – with Marc Teitler); David Hare’s The Secret Rapture (West End – with Marc Teitler); and Playing the Victim (Royal Court). In 2013 Tim composed and conducted the orchestral score to the acclaimed hit Dragon, for Vox Motus/The National Theatre of Scotland and Tianjin People’s Art Theatre of China. Tim’s music from the Dragon soundtrack has been licensed regularly including to major Hollywood films.

In media he has scored a variety of prestige television drama; including the hit series Shameless and Ackley Bridge, the BBC film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot (starring Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman), and the epic period drama Jericho for ITV, amongst others. In North America his scoring credits include Entourage and Delete. He sang the cult hit Song For Ten on the BBC’s Doctor Who and has been a featured performer at international forums from the Royal Albert Hall to Brooklyn Academy of Music to the Sydney Theatre Company to the main stage at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Tim is active in the environmental movement and a former Executive Committee member of the Sierra Club Los Angeles (Central Group).

Tim has a creative partnership with Marc Teitler entitled Ear to Ear.
