Tom Mullen
Tom Mullen is a writer, director and producer whose work spans new musicals, classic adaptations and concert productions. He recently wrote the stage adaptation of Gods & Monsters, produced at Theater Wit under the direction of Paul Oakley Stovall. The production received five Joseph Jefferson Award nominations, including Best Midsize Production, and is now published by Concord Theatricals. He is also the co-author of the new musical Welcome to the Pines with composer Mark Sonnenblick.
Tom is the founder and Artistic Director of Chicago Theatre Workshop, which launched its inaugural season in 2016 with Tony Award winner LaChanze. With CTW, he has produced Wicked City, Creatives and Little Miss Sunshine. He directed Creatives, which received a nomination for Best New Musical at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Additional CTW productions include Seth Rudetsky in Concert, the Chicago premiere of Disaster!, and Grammy nominee Cheyenne Jackson in concert at Victory Gardens.
As a director, Tom has helmed the world premiere of Trainspotting, USA at Theater Wit; the off-Broadway musical Tomorrow Morning at the York Theatre, which received Off-Broadway Alliance and Outer Critics Circle nominations; Joe DiPietro’s FMen for Bailiwick Chicago; and the U.S. premiere of the UK musical Departure Lounge. His Chicago productions include Tomorrow Morning at Greenhouse Theater (Jeff Award for Best Musical, Midsize), Urinetown at Mercury Theatre, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change with Noble Fool Theatricals, and JOE at Chicago Dramatists, earning multiple Jeff Award nominations for Best Director and Best Musical.
He conceived and directed the world premiere of What a Glorious Feeling, an official selection of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, directed Full Gallop starring Emmy Award winner Jill Larson, and staged the world premiere of Wicked City.
Tom has served as associate director on the Broadway revival of Sondheim’s Company at Roundabout Theatre Company and The Rhythm Club at Signature Theatre in Washington, D.C. His national tour credits include The World Goes ’Round (Columbia Artists) and Sellevision (Ohio Theatre, Soho).
His producing and directing work also includes projects with Disney Theatricals, Second City, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In concert, he has directed and produced Grammy winner Oleta Adams, Tony Award winner Sutton Foster and Emmy Award winner Bea Arthur.
Tom holds a BA in Theatre Directing with a concentration in Dramaturgy from Columbia College Chicago.
