Albert Marre (1924-2012) was a prolific director, producer and actor. Marre directed the original Broadway production of Man of La Mancha, for which he won the 1966 Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical. He went on to direct numerous national and international productions of the hit musical, as well as the Broadway revivals in 1972, 1977 and 1992. Marre directed dozens of Broadway shows, including The Relapse (1950), The Little Blue Light (1951), Love’s Labour’s Lost (1953), Kismet (1953; winner, Donaldson Award for Best Director of a Musical), The Chalk Garden (1955; Tony Award nominee for Best Director), Time Remembered (1957), Milk and Honey (1961), Too True to Be Good (1963), Cry for Us All (1970), Home Sweet Homer (1976) and Chu Chem (1989). A co-founder of the historic Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Marre was also an active director in London and Los Angeles, particularly for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Company.
