Lucienne Hill (1923-2012) became well known for her for her translations of French dramatist Jean Anouilh. After a brief career as an actress of stage and screen, she earned a Tony Award nomination for her translation of The Waltz of the Toreadors. In 1961, she won the Tony Award for Best Play for her translation of Anouilh’s Becket. Ms. Hill was first commissioned to translate Anouilh at the behest of Laurence Olivier, a longtime fan. She went on to translate over 30 plays, including the highly successful Dear Antoine.
