Evan Placey

Evan Placey is currently under co-commission with Birmingham Rep, Theatre Royal Plymouth, and West Yorkshire Playhouse, writing Girls Like That which will premiere in 2013. He is also under commission with the National Theatre, where his play Pronoun will premiere in 2014 as part of Connections. He is also under commission with the Unicorn Theatre, YPT (Canada), and BBC Radio 3. Mother of Him was Mr. Placey’s debut full-length play, produced at the Courtyard Theatre in London (winner - King’s Cross Award for New Writing, Canada’s RBC National Playwriting Competition, Samuel French Canadian Play Contest; shortlisted - Meyer Whitworth Award and Rod Hall Memorial Award). A Hebrew production continues to run at the Beit Lessin Theatre in Tel Aviv since it opened in September 2011. Other plays include: Banana Boys (commissioned/produced, Hampstead Theatre's heat&light, 2010); Suicide(s) in Vegas (premiere, South Korea; tour, Canada; nominated, Centaur Theatre Award for Best English Production); Holloway Jones (commissioned/produced, Synergy Theatre Project; tour - schools, Unicorn Theatre, 2011; winner - Brian Way Award 2012 for Best Play for Young People; nominee -  2012 Writers’ Guild Award for Best Play for Children and Young People); Scarberia (Forward Theatre Project; premiere, York Theatre Royal, 2012); How was it for you?, a verbatim play about the Olympics (commissioned/produced, Unicorn Theatre, 2012). Mr. Placey is developing a television project with Little Brother Productions, and is also being mentored by Kudos TV and Red Planet Pictures, as he was shortlisted for the Red Planet Prize. He was part of 4Screenwriting with Channel 4, and the Bush Theatre/Kudos TV development scheme. Mr. Placey’s one-act and short plays include: Phone Play (Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Festival Fringe); Dinner on the Fourteenth Floor (Harbourfront Centre for the Arts, Canada & Orange Tree Theatre, Seoul, South Korea); RainbowBright23 (Rough Cuts Festival, Royal Court Theatre); Twelve (Daring Pairings Festival, Hampstead Theatre/ Factory Theatre & Latitude Festival 2010); Struck by Love/Train (Box of Tricks/Theatre 503); Re:Generation – a community play (Montage Theatre Arts); Grains of a Brighton Summer (Roundhouse/Forward Theatre Project); True Love Waits (co-written, Tour: Box of Tricks Theatre/ Pulse Festival/ Latitude Festival 2011/ Theatre 503/ Nu:Write Festival, Croatia); Terror Tales (Hampstead Theatre); Supergrass (DryWrite/ Bush Theatre); Live Feed (nabakov/ Soho Theatre). Mr. Placey’s poetry is published in TOK 2: Writing the New Toronto (Zypher Press). Mr. Placey is a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama, McGill University, and the Royal Court Young Writers’ Programme and Invitation Group. He is a Creative Writing Fellow at the University of Southampton, and also runs playwriting and theatre outreach projects for young people and adults across London and in prison.
