A SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD. TITLE
Full-Length Play, Drama / 10m, 20 any gender (youth)
Randall Lewton, Peter Miller
A fast-moving, action-packed, fighting musical fantasy comedy for a cast of between 30 and 60 people.
The Elflings are happy to lead peaceful, beautiful lives, until threatened by the Orcs and their leader, Znakbar, who intends to kill an Elfling a day until they relinquish the magic ring. Journeying to find the legendary Seven Golden Dragons to assist them, the Elflings mistake the "Golden Dragon" football team for their saviours and the seven lads find themselves transported to a land of dungeons and dragons. Many exciting adventures happen before the Elflings are free of the Orcs. Landing back on Earth the Seven find it might have been a dream ... or was it ?
The play was first presented at Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby.
Although the characters are referred to as "he" throughout the script, reflecting our original production, there is no reason at all why many of the characters should not be female. Elflings, Orcs and other fantastic creatures are sexless and a production in which Znakbar and the Orcs are played by girls would have an interesting new dimension. I think to make the Golden Dragons themselves female would mean major alterations to parts of the script but feel free to try.
The size of the cast can be varied considerably. There can be large numbers of Orcs and Elflings or you can restrict yourself to the named characters. There is the possibility of doubling in the minor roles (e.g. Dad, Mum, pilots, hijacker, monsters, slaves etc.) allowing a minimum cast of 25/30 but, if you want to include as many people as possible, over 60 could be usefully employed. A large cast will give the songs more impact and make the crowd and fight scenes more exciting.
