A SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD. TITLE
Full-Length Play, Drama / 3w, 13m
David Edgar
The production of this play established David Edgar as a major playwright, one of the most important of the young generation of dramatists to emerge out of the 'portable' theatre movement of the late sixties.
The play opens in 1947 as British soldiers reluctantly celebrate the independence of India, then moves to a West Midlands town in 1876 where a by-election is being held against a background of industrial trouble over Asian labour. The race problem becomes a dominant feature in the contest in which a new party, the Nation Forward, is involved. As the play closes Adolf Hilter appears, with a pertinent comment.
