Behind every great man stands a great woman – this saying is only too true in the case of Herbert and Susan Talmadge. For while the ambitious but chaotic Herbert continually loses out thanks to broken elevators and broken watches, his wife Susan charmingly and skilfully takes care of her husband’s business associates. Thanks to her, Herbert can make his dream come true: to be a millionaire at 39. And if his sons each show a remarkable resemblance to their rich and influential godfathers – so what?
Jack Popplewell sketches out the characters populating this bittersweet comedy with a light, deft hand, including Herbert, who can barely cope with everyday life, and his wife Susan, whose loyalty towards her husband leads her to some quite unconventional behaviour.
