Pygmalion And His Galatea

They are interrupted by Medea, the wife of Phobus a town councillor, and hoping that he has found a rich customer at last Pygmalion manages to conceal his less reputable friends. With Medea is her daughter Iris, a pretty child; Medea informs the astonished Pygmalion that he has been chosen to execute the statues for the new Town Hall on account of the becoming modesty of his products rather than for their brilliance of design. Phobus joins them and confirms the commission, then, manages to lose his family, he joins in the celebration; but left to himself Pygmalion confides in Galatea and discovers that his beloved statue has come to life. Far from being tender, however, she is a masterful young woman who has little time for feminine wiles. But not so Iris - she contrives to return and soon outwits the cold Galatea, for no sooner is Pygmalion aware of Iris' charms than Galatea returns to stone and Pymalion is left in a compromising position of which Iris makes full use; on the return of Medea and Phobus, Pygmalion discovers himself to be not only a Town Council artist but a prospective husband into the bargain.
