Summary
Robert Cardew is the happy possessor of an art gallery and a delightful mistress, Olivia. When her husand dies, Olivia shocks Rupert by refusing to marry him. They have been very happy for fourteen years, she says, why spoil it now? And anyway marrige is not for the middle aed. Rupert finds this attitude irresponsible, not to say wouldning to his self esteem. However, he soon has other preoccupations, in the shape of his god-daughter and her incipient quadruplets, whose father, she says, she does not intend to marry. Rupert's idea of a proper social order is clearly in ruins.
