It's the morning of Gwen's Wedding day and the rain is falling incessantly. One bridesmaid has a sick headache, the other would much rather be taking her dog to the local dog show; even the bride is not very enthusiastic about her husband-to-be. The fact is she is only marrying Jack Orwell because she believes that Tom Osbourne hs thrown her over. But Tom went away to take a good steady job, and Mum, who never approved of him, destroyed the letter he wrote to Gwen. Heralded by a bunch of violets Tom calls to see the bride; he has taken matters into his own hands, not only has he cancelled the exisiting wedding and arranged another, but he also pursuaded Jack to write a letter explainig his own reluctance to go through the wedding as planned. Mum, brought face to face with her duplicity, has little alternative but to agree.
