Summary
Since his wife's death old Uncle Eli has been kept a virtual prisoner in his Sussex cottage by his nephew, Ted, and his avaricious wife, Dorothy, who plot to get hold of his money when he dies, and have insidiously persuading him that he is a very sick man. Only Flower, their young and adopted daughter, has been kind to Eli. Unexpectedly a strange widow, Mrs Scutton, calls to see the old man while Dorothy and Ted are out. She turns out to be the woman Uncle Eli was in love with and nearly married many years before. Having heard of her husband's death in the newspaper Uncle Eli had sent for her because he wants her to marry him and help him to escape from his present predicament. At first Mrs Scutton is naturally hesitant, but when she overhears Dorothy at her plotting and learns at first hand what Uncle Eli is up against she consents to an immediate elopement - and with them they take their unhappy flower.
