This drama is set in China in a Church of England Mission station about to be engulfed in war. There are forty Chinese children and four desperately maimed Chinese women in the Mission; here, also, are seven Englishwomen of vastly different characters and creeds thrown together owing to the results of war. The railway has been bombed and the only means of transport to safety is a lorry capable of taking seven refugees. The reactions of the characters to this situation forms the basis of the play. Worldly common sense dictates that the European women should seize their chance and save themselves. Put to the test, the dominating spirtual force of each individual is discovered, whether unsuspected fortitude, courage, love, faith, peace, trust or selfishness. Each has to choose between the wisdom of men and the foolishness of God.
