The play opens in Belgravia Ladies' Club, a genteel establishment where Mrs Lancaster can grumble and gossip at leisure and make life miserable for her married daughter. Elaine and Brian were happy once, but now things are seriously strained. Then Miss Tracy arrives at the club - her entrance is sensational - so friendly. She has sold up her late father's small home and wants a job. She becomes housekeeper and general amanuensis to Adrian Host, Brian's father and a famous author. In this job she has a chance for her particular brand of meddling - lovers.
