Summary
It is Heather Beckett's wedding morning. She is to marry young Cecil, who is very precise and dull. Heather has, some time before, broken off an engagement to Ted, a care-free and much more entertaining yougn man who is a reporter on the local newspaper. Her mother (whose influence is ill-concealed) is pleased with Heather's new choice, for she regarded Ted as far too irresponsible. Her father and grandmother, however, are sure she would be much happier with him. They are therefore delighted when he arrives to take down particulars for the report of the wedding. Heather and Ted manage to see each other alone - with the exception of her grandmother who appears to be asleep. They indulge in some mutual reproaches, mingled with friendly exchanges of reminiscence. But when the moment for parting comes it is too much for both of them, and the fact that Heather is still wearing the opal ring that Ted once gave her clinches the matter. The couple elope just in time; and as the curtain falls Mrs Beckett is complimenting herself on the stir that the wedding will make.
