Summary
Miss Victoria Sprigge, a gentle spinster, has inherited her aunt's money on condition that she occupies the deceased lady's house in a South Coast town, and provides a home for Sheba, her beloved cat. This does not suit Hannah, Victoria's blunt but affectionate companion-maid. Local ladies who call, and are given tea, make it clear that they expect Victoria to support their various bridge club, dramatic, and artistic activities. Victoria is half flattered, and half dismayed, for all this is going to cost more than she can afford and will sadly disturb her peaceful existence. Hannah, who has overheard these distressing proposals from the masterful visitors, hits on a plan. Sheba, during tea, is by killed by a car outside, unknown to the ladies. What more simple than to convince them that the animal has succumbed after eating the same tinned crab they have themselves been enjoying so heartily? When the doctor has treated the distraught ladies, they depart, barely convinced that they will recover, and feeling very ill-disposed towards Vickie. A next-door neightbour looks in, and reveals the truth of the matter, unaware of Hannah's mendacity. Vicky, at first, is extremely angry about the deception; but is very soon delighted to return with her companion to her own cosy cottage, and her own dog, Flossie, who had been banished to kennels.
