Summary
Bandit groups are terrorizing the mountains and the Emperor's Army make futile attempts to put down local isurrections. The people's leader is Benito Juarez, who is now organizing the revolution which will soon burst forth into Mexico's civil war. Colonel Santos, an officer in Maximillian's Army in Mexico City, receives a new officer, Captain Delorca, and warns him that even in the Army there are officers sympatheticc to the revolution. Together the two men interrogate Senora Morales and her daughter, hoping that they can terrorize the Senora into revealing the whereabouts of her husband Pedro, one of Juarez' leading officers. The women refuse to divulge any information, and Santos, after a brutish display of cunning, releases them. Delorca intimates that Pedro Morales could well be a man in Santos' position who might arrest his own wife and child, question and intimidate them in front of a witness, purely as a blind and an alibi. If, however, this premise were true, a man in Delorca's position would say nothing. The two soliders realize that they are, in fact, allies, and together they drink a toast to Juarez and Mexico's freedom.
