Summary
In a meteorological station 73 degrees North of the Equator, are stationed two men, Jack and Bob. Many weeks of isolation and routine have frayed their nerves, and they now constantly bicker and quarrel, even over trivial matters. During a card game Bob's control snaps, and he seizes a loaded rifle. Jack knocks him senseless and takes the rifle outside for safety. In his absence Bob recovers, and fearing Jack will kill him decides, in a frenxy, that his companion shall die too. He turns on the tap of the oil drum which they depend for heat and lights. Jack, returning, is furious and Bob is made to realize the terrible situation in which they now are, by his act. An American air-pilot, having made a forced landing, interrupts their quarrel. He is compelled to jettison a tank of petrol. This will enable him to take one of them back, but not both. He decides that Bob shall return in the plane, and he will take the spare tank of petrol and the chance of living until the time for his relief.
