Summary
The play is a picture of life in a Home for Retired Actors, in which are introduced a number of typical theatrical characters. Each of them has memories of which they are justly proud and others which they try to forget. They all have their prejudices, their jealousies, even their little hates. Underneath it all, however, abide that kindness, spirit of comradeship, generosity, and all the charming qualities that flower so gaily among theatre folk. Connie Kitchin, ex-Variety Star, might easily expose the legitimate actor, Clifford Cordell, as one who began his career with a "dog act" on the halls, a field of activity which Clifford affects to despise. Whatever their mutual criticisms and conflicts may be, they are all whole-hearted in wishing Stephanie, the great-niece of one of their fellow-inmates, every success after winning the Bancroft Medal. Clifford's gracious and tender devotion to his failing wife and his complete sincerity in giving counsel to the newly-fledged actress, compel Connie to refrain from revelation. The curtain falls on Cordell's passionate appeal for integrity in the art of the theatre, in the striving for the "complete illusion".
