Nineteen years later, Albert and Alicia, married but childless, gather in George and Cheryl's sumptuous home for the annual celebration of the Night of the Dreadful Bed anniversary and, as ever, the bitter recriminations and resentments begin. Albert, a failed doctor turned second-rate village chemist, hungers for glory and fulfillment while indulging in florid sexual fantasies; Alicia, loving and faithful to Albert, wants only his happiness; George, a richly successful bottle-factory owner, has lost his sexual zest and fears losing his sexually rapacious wife Cheryl, while she finds satisfaction in the nearby Army camp determined that she, at least, will enjoy her life to the full.
