Summary
To keep well up to date, and also to let some of her friends get a taste of what she can do, Lady Adela publishes her diary. It is called Me and My Diary! Some of the passages are indiscreet, some frankly untruthful, and some pure imagination. Trouble quickly descends upon her.  A lady's maid arrives with a suggestion that some slight compensation alone will prevent an action for libel - Mrs Cheneys, who has suffered the most spiteful remarks, well on fire, and then Phyllis Arkwright, annoyed beyond measure that she has been ignored in the book altogether. Lady Adela is battling with her persecutors whenHumphrey Woods turns up. Humphrey is an old flame, not heard of for years, but much mentioned in the famous diary. Lady Adela jumps to the conclusion he has come from foreign parts to resume his affection for her. In point of fact he has come to suggest that in the event of her continuing a literary career, it would be as well to call in the assistance of his wife - the wife is so accurate in detail. Lady Adela begins to get hysterical.
