The genteel thin-lipped Mrs Dobson is irked by her paying-guest, Miss Queenie Tremayne, a vulgar good-natured actress who is fully a match for her, and whose money she needs. She pins her hopes on the marriage of her daughter Sadie to Tony Mortimore, a millionaire's adopted nephew and heir.
It is to take place on the following day, and - by her advice - secretly, since the uncle is bound to disapprove. Mrs Dobson's sister Lily and her henpecked husband are invited to meet the bridegroom. The young man arrives with the shattering news that he has been disinherited, as the sequel to his straightforward statement of his intentions. Mrs Dobson and her sister rave at him. Lily's husband shows his kindly nature, and Sadie, glad that she is not marrying for money, comforts her Tony and assures him that she will marry him as arranged.
