Summary

Barbara is very house-proud. She would be happy to entertain Basil's friends had they not unexpectedly inflicted on her for a free fortnight at a time when she has agreed, for economic reasons, to sacrifice her own holiday. George and Delia are not the ideal gueests, he is clumsy and hearty and she is vacuous. Within hours they have created havoc in the tidy living room, used all the hot water and mixed soap with the breakfast sausages. At this point the Milkman arrives and, to his surprised pleasure, finds himself dispensing more than milk to the over-wrought Barbara. With each succeeding crisis she gains more comfort from his return visits and contemplates escape on his scooter to the peace and quiet of the Downs, with blissful anticipation.
