How do you live your life in four short years?
This is the question actor and writer Michael Patrick is faced with after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease - the same disease that killed his father. It all started with his right foot but has spread to his upper body and Michael must adjust to his rapidly changing reality. However, a new drug trial offers hope. A true story about disability, perseverance, and living life to the full.
Published alongside the production at the Dublin Theatre Festival opening on 7th October, transferring to Lyric Theatre, Belfast.
My Right Foot was first produced in AXIS Art centre and theatre as part of Dublin Theatre Festival on 7 October 2025 and then at Lyric Belfast on 12 October 2025.
MICK – An actor/writer in his mid-30s. He has motor neurone disease.
DOCTOR – A posh sounding neurologist.
ORLA – An MND professor from an affluent area of Dublin.
MUM – Mick’s mum. Slightly country.
TIM – Mick’s father-in-law. Doesn’t say much.
NAOMI –Mick’s wife. Forceful.
HANNAH – Mick’s wee sister. Loud.
MAURICE – Mick’s wee brother. Quiet.
KATE – Mick’s older sister. Emotional.
THERAPIST – Not the best.
ANDY – Mick’s mate. Loves films.
ARTHUR – Mick’s mate. Drinker.
PAT – Mick’s mate. Dramatic.
AUNTIE – Mick’s auntie. Slightly country.
OT – Occupational Therapist. Not good at his job.
UNCLE – Mick’s uncle. Brash.
YOUNG MICK – Mick as a child.
KING LEAR – Shakespeare’s tragic King.
OLD MAN 1 – Old man at the gym. Naked.
OLD MAN 2 – Old man at the gym. Naked.
WHEELCHAIR MAN – Scottish man. Sells wheelchairs.
All characters to be played by one actor. Some of the characters may be
presented as voice overs – but if that is the case, they should be recorded
by the same actor playing Mick.

Michael Patrick was born and raised in Belfast. In primary 6, he wrote a story of the nativity from the donkey’s perspective, and his teacher told his mother that he was going to be a writer. He then went off to study Physics at Cambridge University.
