A DRAMATISTS PLAY SERVICE TITLE
Full-Length Play, Dramatic Comedy / 1w, 4m
Philip Dawkins
David is a self-possessed New York librarian with a need for classification, a love for collecting rare books he never opens and a strong ambivalence about marriage. What happens when his best friend’s bachelor party takes him to Montreal, and he is swept off his feet by a charming young florist? A witty and whimsical romantic comedy tied in knots.
David cannot commit. His relationships only last about three months, and both his twin sister Sarah and his best friend Zachary have caught on to his pattern. Zachary’s upcoming wedding, now legal in New York state, is making David even more anxious. If David’s gay identity has been defined by otherness for the past thirty-five years, what does it mean now, in 2011, when the world is telling him that he and his community are no longer othered? With that weighing on his mind, he sets off to Montréal for the bachelor weekend, leaving behind his roommate Frank, who has been recently widowed. But when David meets Benoît, an impossibly charming man about ten years his junior, David’s view of himself, his heart and his future are turned upside down. A rare gay romantic comedy, Le Switch challenges us to resist old habits of self-protection and embrace the thrilling, terrifying, unknown future that only love can bring.
Le Switch premiered as a co-world premiere between About Face Theatre in Chicago, IL, where it first performed in February 2016, and Jungle Theater in Minneapolis, MN, where it performed in April 2016. In Chicago at About Face, the production was directed by Stephen Brackett and featured La Shawn Banks, Stephen Cone, Mitchell J, Fain, Elizabeth Ledo and Collin Quinn Rice. In Minneapolis at Jungle Theater, the production was directed by Jeremy B. Cohen and featured Patrick Bailey, Emily Gunyou Halaas, Michael Hanna, Kasey Mahaffy and Michael Wieser.

“A crackling gay rom-com with philosophical depth.” – The Minnesota Star Tribune
“Wonderfully smart… Dawkins’ delightfully fun play does more than expand the romantic comedy formula to include gay men; like all good romances, it picks at universal flaws in love and relationships.” – Time Out Chicago
“Philip Dawkins has a knack for depicting contemporary LGBT life with warmth and wisecracks… [He] displays a tender compassion for gays still carrying the scars of feeling unwelcome and inferior.” – Chicago Reader
