Overview
Daphne Verker's mother is dead. Her espeical pride is running the house of her rector father and looking after her three brothers and a young sister with all the care and attention that strict economy makes possible under the poor circumstances in which they are obliged to live. There comes to the house Sir John Carr, and old friend of the rector now a millionaire coal magnate, and known to his associates as "Juggernaut". "Juggernaut", forty two years of age , is persuaded to stay and at the end of three weeks is very much in love with the capable Daphne and wishes to marry her. A "Saftey Match" ensues, whereby Daphne, in return for becoming Juggernaut's wife, is able to give the young family there chance in life. Three years of marriage pass away in misery, chiefly owing to the lack of tact and understanding on the part of Juggnernaut, who treats his wife as he woukd his men. A disturbance has been brewing in the pits for some time, and coming to a head, the men, drunk and disorderly, storm the house. Juggernaut handles the situstion magnificently, mostly owing to the barvery of his wife who rises to the occasion in the moment of danger. She wins the hearts of the miners, and the incident promises to develop into a much kindlier attitude toward one another between Juggernaught and Daphne.
