Summary
Marshall K. Hunt and his wife Girlie, straight from Brookesville, in the State of Maine, enter an old cottage in a remote English village and ask for tea. Marshall is a typical American, but Girlie is different. Old things attract her enormously and, therefore, who shall blame her when seeing an antiquated shawl lying over the back of a chair, she begs her husband to buy it? Miss Mulberry, the owner, is approached as to the price, but refuses to sell. Her reason is a sentimental one. The shawl, she says, was given to her twenty-five years ago by a man who went off to make his fortune and for whom she still waits. By strange coincidence the absentee returns, not rich but a poor man. Embellished by many tears, the decision is arrived at by Miss Mulberry and her returned hero that the shawl must after all be sold, and so twenty-five good pounds change hands. Deeply moved by the scene they have gone through, the Americans depart, Girlie overjoyed at getting her wish. Miss Mulberry and Company then think about setting the scene for the next wandering Americans, the intial move being to order up a new consignment of shawls.
