Mai didn’t expect her heaven to be reliving an engagement to an unfaithful husband. He’s becoming a Buddhist monk. Mai’s daughter Tâm is desperate to understand her mother. As time slips away and dreams overlap with reality, Mai and Tâm must learn how to love each other before heaven comes for them again.
love you long time (already) is a funny and moving intergenerational epic about a Vietnamese mother and daughter grappling with their immigration to America, infidelity and first love. Through it all, their rocky relationship remains the one constant in their lives. A play about navigating love with all its sharp corners and quiet complexities.
love you long time (already) was originally workshopped and developed in the 2022 Pacific Playwrights Festival as part of The Lab at South Coast Repertory. It then premiered in London at Theatre503 in partnership with the Sông Collective on 2 July 2026. Directed by Jennifer Tang, the production featured Jon Chew, Tuyen Do, Molly Harris and Zheng Xi Yong.

The age of these characters should be portrayed through acting and clothing choices. There should be a visible generational difference between Mai/Long and Tâm/Huy. This cast should be fully Vietnamese.
