Ellen grew up in the country and Rumsey and Bates, who knew her as a child fell in love with her. Rumsey, ended their relationship, advising her to find younger men. Ellen may have gone away with Bates but, she loved Rumsey more. While Ellen and Bates lived unhappily in town, Rumsey lived in contentment in the country.
