Roger, a clergyman, has been appointed rector to a village in a rural area. He moves into the rectory with his wife Cathy.
It is an old Georgian building and badly needs a new kitchen and heating system. On Roger's salary they cannot afford to pay for renovations and an approach to the archdeacon does not get them any money.
Roger is very against current lax morals and is especially against the football pools - which he condemns regularly from his pulpit. In an effort to raise money Cathy takes a half share in a football pool with the cleaning lady. The dilemma comes when they win...
