A SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD. TITLE
Full-Length Play, Comedy / 2w, 5m
John Dighton
Inside a Grace and Favour house in St James's Palace lives Miles and his sister Alex and their father Sir Ralph Cornwall. Outside stands Arthur on sentry duty. On the day that Miles is being packed off to Baffin Bay to cool his ardour, Arthur's sweetheart Christina arrives from Dublin to find out why he wants to break the engagement.
Whilst trying to keep pace with Arthur on his beat, Chrisstina turns her ancle and faints. The distracted sentry carries her hastily into the Cornwalls' house, dumps her and returns to duty. Miles, whose plane has been delayed, comes home, finds Christina and, after a brief misunderstanding of the reasons for her presence, falls in love with her. Now Arthur's trouble, it seems, is that he has become infactuated with an unknown girl he sees about the Palace precincts, and this turns out to be Alex. But Alex is being wooed by Major Ashley, Arthur's Commanding Officer; and Arthur soon finds himself in trouble for his very unorthodox behaviour. A little gentle blackmail however puts the sentry in the clear, and Christina who, in spite of her naive charm, knows where her affectio really lies, administers to Miles his much-needed emotional kick, and takes the job of maid in the Cornwall house where she can keep her eye on her Arthur.
