The Fenton family are gathered together in their Midland village chapel for the funeral of their oldest member. All still live lovally except for Marian, who some time ago moved away and married a doctor. She is, and feels, an outsider and during the service turns to the audience with some fairly caustic comments about the close-knit family...
After the service, the chapel becomes the living-room of the elder Fenton's home. Marian's presence continues to be a disrupting influence. A climax is reached when she hears that her brother Ted has been discouraged by his wife Christine from continuing a degree course. Christine, however, declares that Ted is happier and better remaining in unadventurous contentment. After a final confrontation with Peter, the minister, she slips quietly away as the family sing a hymn heartily in the chapel, which is now beautifully decorated for the Harvest Festival.
