Summary
Mrs Bryce, a brutally treated wife and inhabitant of a cottage in one of the poorest quarters of a large city, sees blood on her husband's face, and upon pressing for the reason, is told that he has had a fight with one Tiger-Mike. A Mrs Vallance calls, and whilst indulging in the talk of the town, reveals the fact that Tiger-Mike has been found murdered. Once her neighbour has gone, Mrs Bryce is all effort to save her husband, and begs him to get away quickly, offering him all her savings which she has collected over a period of many years. Just as he is about to go, imploring her forgiveness, a step is heard, outside and Bryce is quickly hidden. The visitor, however, is Mrs Bryce's borther-in-law, a policeman, and he soon quashes the rumour of the murder. Mike has merely been stunned. When he has gone, the husband, leaving his hiding-place and assuming his old manner, picks up the savings of years and walks from the room, intending never to return.
