Powered by exuberant flash mobs that express rage, power and helpful tips about what could be going on with your vagina, The Doctor Will See You Shortly is a dramedy for anyone who’s ever felt dread about going to the gynecologist.

The Doctor Will See You Shortly premiered off-Broadway at the Keen Teens Festival of New Work at Theatre Row on 17 May 2024 under the direction of Susanna Jaramillo.

PATIENTS:
MARI – Edgy goth nerd. Diagnosed with anxiety. Has endometriosis.
ZAZ – Soccer jock. Awaiting test results for STDs. Has herpes. Also has ovarian cysts, which frequently rupture.
BROOK – School smart. Researches health stuff. Diagnosed with “small vagina.” Has undiagnosed vestibulodynia.
CHARLIE – Almost popular but has a strict mom. Diagnosed with PMS. Charlie will never find out what’s wrong.
AJ – New kid. Diagnosed with PMS/hormone issues. Has undiagnosed adrenal disorder.

HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS:
ELLA (she/her) – Receptionist. Bitter about all these teenagers. She’s healthy gynecologically, but her birth control causes her migraines.
SERENA – Receptionist. Plays Ella’s games, but secretly training to be a nurse. Has undiagnosed vestibulodynia.
DOC (she/her) – The doctor. 29 and overwhelmed. Has an undiagnosed pregnancy. Also has an undiagnosed need for a career change.

FAMILY MEMBERS:
FAY – Charlie’s older sibling. In college nearby. Gets dragged into babysitting Charlie. Has heavy periods that make Fay faint.
BABY – Mari’s younger sibling. Mari sometimes has to babysit them while going to appointments. Any gender.

ENSEMBLE:
Other patients in the waiting room. In the interludes, they become flash mobs and create silent scenes.

For the roles of Mari, Brook, Zaz, Charlie, AJ, Fay and Serena, anyone who has lived experience in a gynecologist’s waiting room OR plans to in the future, they/she/he, is welcome.

Ella and the doctor are cis women and may be played by anyone who feels comfortable playing a cis woman.
