Alienne

In a prologue, several Martian friends decide to share a Martian story with their all-Earthling audience. They explain that any time someone uses the phrase “My little Martian,” everyone in the theatre should interrupt by singing the show’s theme song (“My Little Martian”). They proceed with the tale of Alienne: The Musical Adventures of My Little Martian (“My Little Martian” Reprise).

Nebula, ruler of Mars, welcomes creatures from all over the universe to his annual party, where one rule prevails: no Earthlings allowed (“The Martian Ball”). Nebula’s teenage daughter, spunky Alienne, skips out on the party to admire the stars and wonder how people live on Earth. Her best friend Cosmina – joined by the spirits of their Martian ancestors – reminds Alienne of something every Martian knows: Unlike Martians, who are perfect, humans are fallible, making mistakes and allowing emotions to cloud their judgment (“The Earthling Stomp”). Alienne doesn’t care; she knows what she wants (“I Wanna Be a Human.”) She decides to ask Earthsula the Space Witch to transform her into an Earthling.

Meanwhile, on planet Earth, a good-natured guy named Tim, who happens to love everything about outer space, tells his robot pal Sprocket about his dreams (“I Wanna Meet a Martian”).

At her space hangout, Earthsula quarrels with her goofy sidekick, Quark, before effortlessly reciting the magic words in her astral incantation (“Spell #1”). Alienne arrives and discovers that the evil sorceress is feisty, bold and fabulous (“Space Witch”). Earthsula grants Alienne’s wish: She will be human for one day, but she must return to Earthsula before tomorrow’s solar eclipse, or Earthsula will cast her into the Black Hole forever (“Spell #2”).

Using Nebula’s space pod, Alienne travels to Earth, where she just happens to crash on the front lawn of Tim and Sprocket. They quickly become friends, and Tim helps her repair her pod, which she claims is a newfangled plane. Together, they take the craft for an enchanting spin (“Catch the Moon”).

Nebula realizes that Alienne is missing and, to his astonishment, begins to feel something akin to regret. When Cosmina draws attention to his burgeoning emotions, Nebula becomes defensive and vows to punish his daughter when he finds her (“Alienne”).

Earthsula, meanwhile, resents that Alienne is having such a good time. She decides to go to Earth to distract Alienne, assuring her that she’ll linger long past the solar eclipse. Transforming herself to “partly human, partly witch,” Earthsula turns Quark into her pet kitty. Unfortunately, Quark is allergic to cats (“Spell #3”).

Nebula finally begins to understand his daughter’s perspective, so Cosmina tells him the truth: Alienne stole his pod and headed to Earth. Together, Cosmina and Nebula set off to find her.

Tim, Alienne and Sprocket enjoy their evening together, unaware of the passing hours (“The Solar Eclipse, Part 1”). Earthsula and Quark crash their pod nearby. Earthsula, now unrecognizable to Alienne, asks Tim and Alienne to help her repair her vehicle. They get to work, and time continues to tick away (“The Solar Eclipse, Part 2”).

Suddenly, everything goes dark… it’s the solar eclipse! Earthsula reveals herself and triumphantly vows to send Alienne to the Black Hole. But before Earthsula can begin the spell, there is another crash – Nebula and Cosmina have arrived. (Quark asks, “Doesn’t anyone around here know how to properly land a space pod?”). Nebula, grateful and relieved to find his daughter, apologizes to Alienne and admits she was right: Sometimes it’s good to have feelings, even bad ones, to remind you that you’re alive (“Alienne” Reprise). Nebula volunteers to go to the Black Hole in Alienne’s place. Earthsula doesn’t mind – she’ll take a king over a princess any day. But when she tries to recite the magic words, she keeps getting them wrong (“Spell #4”). Quark reminds her that she’s still part human, and humans make mistakes. Thanks to Earthsula’s bungled incantation, the spell is reversed. Earthsula is sent to the Black Hole, and all the souls she sent there are set free.

Nebula acknowledges that he was unfair to humans. He proposes another Martian Ball – and this time, everyone is invited. Alienne apologizes to Tim for lying about her identity, but he is delighted that she’s a Martian; they’ll remain friends no matter what she is. Everyone celebrates, agreeing that it’s best to proudly be the one and only you (“Be Who You Are”).

KING/QUEEN NEBULA – Any gender. Ruler of Mars. Imperious, haughty, noble, unyielding.
ALIENNE – F. Nebula’s teenage daughter. Spunky, optimistic, resourceful, brave.
COSMINA – F. Alienne’s best friend. Trendy, hip, astute, no-nonsense.
TIM – M. Human amateur astronomer. Intelligent, affable, wistful, sincere.
SPROCKET – Any gender. Tim’s robot companion. Sarcastic, dry, sesquipedalian.
EARTHSULA – F. Evil space witch. Wicked, impatient, powerful, fabulous. Quark says she looks like a professional wrestler.
QUARK – Any gender. Earthsula’s hench creature. Goofy, content, appealingly dumb. Quark could be anything: A furry pet? A rock-like gnome? A lizard? Doesn’t matter, as long as Quark is funny.
