Willy Russell
Written for BBC School Radio by the author of Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, this telling play visits a local radio station when its late night broadcast is interrupted by a gun toting escapee from police custody. The vandalism for which he was convicted was in reality a one man stand against the lies told by advertisers and DJs to sell products and promote a dream world. Willy Russell’s career spans more than four decades; born in Liverpool in 1947, he left school at 15 and became a women’s hairdresser and part-time singer/songwriter performing on the local folk scene before returning to education and becoming a teacher.
