Summary
In a common-place suburan home, George Fleetwood, a mild little man, is bullied and suppressed by his wife Alice and his daughter Elsie, and has been driven to such a pitch of unhappiness that he is on the brink of murdering them. Elsie goes to a dance with Norman, a young man of considerable means and inconsiderable virtues of any description. While George is ou at a bowling-match Alice entertains a friend. The young couple return for a forgotten latch-key, and announce that they are engaged. The sound of fire-engines has been heard, and the lights go out; there is a fire at the Power Station. When the dim oil lamp has been lit, George has appeared. His manner is completely changed, and he quickly dominates the scene, ordering Norman out and terrifying the others; the lamp goes out and the scene rises to hysteria. Then the lights are restored, and there is no sign of George. A neighbour brings the news that he lost his life in the fire, which spread to the public-house where the match was being held. Alice, stupefied, remembers her hsuband's last mocking words, as he told her he was leaving her, "Every once in a while, I'll come back!"
