The framework of this spine tingler is unusual: a lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Anyone who sees her dies! The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre.
The Woman in Black premiered in Scarborough at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round on 11 December 1987. Directed by Robin Herford, the production featured Dominic Letts, Lesley Meade and Jon Strickland.
It was subsequently presented in London by the Lyric Hammersmith 11 January 1989. Directed again by Robin Herford, the production featured John Duttine, Charles Kay and Nicola Sloane.
The production transferred to the Strand Theatre, opening on 15 February 1989; to the Playhouse on 18 April 1989 and finally to the Fortune Theatre 7 June 1989, all with the same cast, where it ran in excess of five years with several cast changes.
